Vicinity and military heritage of Skulte
Various stories have been heard that planes went on distant secret missions from Skulte, spies were operating in the vicinity of the Airport Riga. Let’s follow in their footsteps.
We will see the oldest building in Marupe Municipality. The old cemetery bell tower and a bell cast in 1927 on the new bell tower. The route includes military facilities in the vicinity of Skulte, including an IL-28 military bomber, and a story about the 17th National Guard Air Defence Battalion – a former missile base. We will also visit the memorial site White Cross. At the aircraft observation site, we will see Airport Riga runway.
The trip starts and ends in Jaunmarupe.
There are no specific requirements to clothing. An umbrella or a raincoat, spare shoes or socks may come in handy – there will be various coverings.
Take snacks and drinks with you for lunch, a picnic break is possible in Skulte in the equipped place immediately after the trip.
Shops will be available at the start and at the end of the trip.
Few amenities are available.
Flashlights for dark premises can come in handy, binoculars – to try to look into the cockpit of the aircraft.
