Hike along the Loja and Gauja rivers in the Murjāņi area
The beginning of the Gauja ancient valley is at the Abula tributary, and the end – near Murjani. Although the ancient valley of the Gauja reaches its maximum depth (85 m) near Sigulda, the views around Ramkalni are also impressive. The most picturesque part of the Loja Valley is from Ramkalni to Murjani Sports Gymnasium.
We will explore – a 1978 wooden toboggan track, beautiful sandstone cliffs and river bends, an abandoned mink farm and enjoy nature while listening to my stories.
The hike starts and ends in Ramkalni.
Public transport: there is a regular bus service between Sigulda and Riga. The nearest bus stop is “Sēnite” (at the intersection of Valmiera and Vidzeme highways).
Ramkalni is about 1.5 km or about 20 minutes’ walk from the bus stop.
Bring some snacks and drinks with you for lunch, we will eat while walking along the river or in one of the equipped recreation areas.
The shop is available only in Ramkalni.
Binoculars may come in handy to watch birds in the area.
There are no special requirements for clothing. An umbrella or raincoat, spare shoes or socks may come in handy, – we will walk along paths with different surfaces. Some places can be slippery and muddy. It is recommended that you bring good hiking shoes with you. Shoes should have a sufficiently stiff sole so that you can safely move on rough terrain and snowy (in winter) slopes. Shoes must be breathable and waterproof.
